Medical Narration

J. Michael Collins discussed the ins and outs of doing medical narration. It’s a lucrative VO genre that flies under the radar, encompassing mostly ELEARNING & corporate narration-style reads of a medical nature.

There’s 4 types of medical narration scripts:

  • Journal content, which pays $2,500 minimum per finished hour

  • Method of action (MOA)

  • Important safety information (ISI) has a similar rhythm as a pharma commercial and should be read a little slower now.

  • Doctors’ notes - not worth your time because they don’t pay well

Some scripts have an element of sell and branding, like pharma. A polished, warm, formal read. More notes:

  • You can breathe after punctuation, gerunds (words that end with -ing), the words to, and, & for. Honor the script—no improv. Don’t read fast because most of the audience for these speak ESL.

  • Websters online dictionary is a great place to check pronunciation.

  • He reads at about 6k words per hour— slower than elearning.

  • P2P, direct marketing, & SEO are how you get work in this genre.

  • Life sciences, biotech, healthcare companies are your buyers.
